The Sun in He I, observed by SUMER 26.Jun.96

[Full Picture]

The Sun seen in in the emission line of Helium I at 584 Å (chromosphere, temperature 20 000 K).

In support of the SOHO underflight rocket, flown in order to calibrate the Solar EUV Monitor (SEM) on SOHO, two full disk observations were performed in a special sweep mode in He I before and during the rocket launch. Each of these lasted 20 minutes.

In addition, another full Sun image was taken in He I. The raster step size was 3.01 arcsec, the exposure time 2 seconds per raster step. The line intensity was calculated by simply integrating a spectral window of approx. 1.1 Å surrounding the line. Therefore, the whole image could be sampled in just 4:40 hours.
