Press Release 5/2004, May 27th, 2004
MPAe through the ages
Name change for the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy.
The Institute, which has existed since 1957 under the name Max Planck
Institute for Aeronomy, has seen a number of transformations in its
lifetime. During the 50's and 60's, the scientific emphasis was on the
exploration of the Earth's upper atmosphere, but in the following decades
this was extended to include new areas involving the solar system. The
current thrust of research now concentrates on the exploration of
the Sun, Heliosphere, planets, and comets, that is, on all the essential
parts of the solar system.
With the retirement of Prof. Sir Ian Axford and Prof. Tor Hagfors and
with the appointment of Prof. Ulrich Christensen and Prof. Sami K. Solanki,
this new thrust is reflected in the directorship as well. This development
will for the time being, culminate with the retirement of Dr. Helmut
Rosenbauer on 30th June 2004.
In order to more accurate by reflect the Institute's current activities,
the Max Planck Society has accepted the proposal to change the name,
effective 1st July 2004, to
Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research
The renaming is coupled with the introduction of a new logo, which should
increase the Institute's visibility:
The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research shall make every effort
to maintain the good reputation the Institute under the new name and
"outfit", and where possible, to enhance it.
