The Solar System School is situated in southern Lower Saxony, the "center of gravity of Germany". Between the two traditional university towns Göttingen and Braunschweig lies the Harz mountains. In the Harz there are two national parks. With its colourful landscape, the Harz is popular for recreation and provides a variety of sport possibilities. Katlenburg-Lindau and the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research is about 30 km northeast of Göttingen, close to the Harz.
