The goal is to discuss numerical simulations of wave propagation through complex media. In particular, various strategies and issues related to the numerical treatment of wave propagation in the near surface layers of the Sun. We will place emphasis on two topics: the need for a set of standard tests which numerical codes should reproduce as a form of code validation; and on the various ways of constructing background solar models containing inhomogeneities.
