Full Disk Image made by SUMER 28.Jan.96

The Sun seen in the C III lines at 977.020 Å. This line is representative of a temperature just below 100 000 K and, therefore, of the transition region between the solar chromosphere and corona. The full spatial resolution of SUMER, of approximately 1 arcsec, could not be utilized in the image, which is shown in bins of 3 x 3 pixels. The patchy pattern is the chromospheric network, with individual cells being of the size of about 30 000 km. Also note some prominences over the limb. This image was the first full Sun scan of SUMER.
